Brooklyn Ha Ha: NYC Stand-up with Josh Gondelman, Doug Smith
Brooklyn is quietly becoming the nation's capital of comedy. As Brooklyn-born Jimmy Fallon brings The Tonight Show rightfully back to the right coast, we recognize that behind the scenes, many if not most of late night TV's writers, tomorrow's headlining stand-ups and just about every SNL-wannabe sketch group are all living in Brooklyn. To wit, Josh Gondelman, the Brooklyn comic who will be joining us for the whole tour, just picked up a job as web producer of HBO's forthcoming and mildly anticipated "Last Week with John Oliver".
But don't take our word for it. Look at what respected business newspaper The Wall Street Journal has to say about Brooklyn comedy: "The vibrant alt-comedy scene that used to be centered in the East Village a few years ago has now become scattered throughout Brooklyn."
See? Pretty impressive.
In true Brooklyn style, Brooklyn Ha Ha introduces some of NYC's best under-the-radar talent along with one of New Orleans' very own, OUTSIDE of the traditional comedy club and INSIDE the edgy confines of a rock club. Again, pretty impressive. Now, let's meet our comics:
Josh Gondelman is a writer and comedian who got his start in Boston before moving to New York City, and you may know him from his Modern Seinfeld Twitter. With years of experience as a preschool teacher and polite manners, Josh charms audiences using his good-natured storytelling and cracks them up with his sharp, pointy wit.
In 2010, Josh traveled to Atlanta for the inaugural Laughing Skull Comedy Festival, where he turned heads and captured first prize! Since then he has become an in-demand performer on a national scale. He has performed at the Rooftop Comedy Festival in Aspen, CO, and headlined at the Laugh Your Asheville Off Festival in Asheville, NC. More recently he has appeared in the Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival, the Bridgetown Comedy Festival, and SF Sketchfest. Josh's debut standup comedy CD, “Everything’s The Best” was released in November of 2011 by Rooftop Comedy Productions.
“Did I say clever? Josh Gondelman is that. Whether cracking on his Jewish background or relationships, he plucked witty surprises from his personal experiences that impressed me.” - America’s Comedy
Doug Smith was featured as a New Face at the prestigious Montreal Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in 2013 after only four years as a stand-up comic. Since then he has appeared at the Oddball Comedy & Curiosity Festival as well as AXS TV’s Gotham Comedy Live. A regular at NYC clubs and alternative rooms, Doug continues to hone his talent and build his fan base. With a unique upbringing as the much younger child in a family of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Doug has plenty to draw from and is quickly becoming one of the sharpest writers in NYC. He has extensive improv training from the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater and currently co-produces See You In Hell!, an award winning stand-up/variety show at The Creek and The Cave in Long Island City.
Hosting talent comes from New Orleans local favorite, Fred "Red Bean" Plunkett.
